The Vuse cart was an out of the box Magento cart upon which layers of compliance concerns and marketing desires had been piled. Not the least of it problems were performance issues that allowed users to take additional action while the system was still processing the previous action. I immediately flagged performance and lack of appropriate system status indicators as the first and most critical UX issue. Working with the technical teams we cleaned up all the unnecessary tags, identified ways to gain efficiencies on the backend, and implemented the appropriate status UI letting the user know that their action is being processed and preventing them from taking conflicting actions. Beyond that we ran research and user testing to define a cart experience that was simple, effective, and aligned with the subscription first business model.
